اعداد اصلی (cardinal) همان اعداد معمولی هستند. اعداد ترتیبی (Ordinal) اعدادی مانند اول، دوم، سوم، و .... هستند. به غیر از چند استثناء برای ساختن عدد ترتیبی به آخر عدد th اضافه می‌‌‌‌کنیم. (در عدد یک از st – در عدد دو از nd و در عدد 3 از rd استفاده می‌شود.)

0th = zeroth or nought

1st = first

2nd = second

3rd = third

4th = fourth

5th = fifth

6th = sixth

7th = seventh

8th = eighth

9th = ninth

10th = tenth

11th = eleventh

12th = twelfth

20th = twentieth

21st = twenty-first

25th = twenty-fifth

30th = thirtieth

32nd = thirty-second

40th = fortieth

50th = fiftieth

58th = fifty-eighth

60th = sixtieth

64th = sixty-fourth

70th = seventieth

79th = seventy-ninth

80th = eightieth

83rd = eighty-third

90th= ninetieth

99th = ninety-ninth

پس به طور کلی عدد هر چه باشد آن را می خوانیم و به آخرین عدد st, nd, rd  یا th

اضافه  می‌کنیم.

طرز گفتن روز و ماه و سال

مرسوم‌ترین روش برای گفتن سال، گفتن اعداد به صورت دو تایی است. یعنی به سال 1920 گفته می‌شود: nineteen-twenty

1BC=  one BC سال یک قبل از میلاد

235 =  Two thirty-five

999 = Nine ninety-nine

1000 = One thousand

1225 = Twelve twenty-five

1900 = Nineteen hundred

1901 = Nineteen oh-one

1919 = Nineteen nineteen

1999 = Nineteen ninety-nine

2000 = Two thousand or Twenty hundred

2001 = Two thousand (and) one or Twenty oh-one

2009 = Two thousand (and) nine or Twenty oh-nine

2010 = Twenty-ten or Two thousand (and) ten

2025 = Twenty twenty-five

2099 = Twenty ninety-nine

2100 = Twenty-one hundred

2101 = Twenty-one-oh-one or Two thousand, one hundred (and) one

اعداد کسری و اعشاریFractions and decimals                       

ا. اعداد کسری

برای بیان اعداد کسری معمولا صورت کسر را معمولی و مخرج کسر را ترتیبی می‌خوانیم:

1/16 = one-sixteenth           

1/10 or 0.1 = one-tenth            

1/8 = one-eighth

2/10 or 0.2 = two-tenths          

¼ = one-quarter (British) or one-fourth (American)

3/10 or 0.3 = three-tenths        

1/3 = one-third                     

 3/8 = three-eighths

4/10 or 0.4 = four-tenths          

½ = one half                         

6/10 or 0.6 = six-tenths

5/8 = five-eighths                   

2/3 = two-thirds                     

7/10 or 0.7 = seven-tenths  

¾ = three-quarters (British) or three-fourths (American)           15/16 = fifteen-sixteenths

 گاهی اوقات ممکن است از کلمه‌ی over  به معنای روی هم استفاده شود. مثلا برای 8/2 گفته شود: eight over two . (بیشتر در انگلیسی بریتانیا)

2. اعداد اعشاری

در اعداد اعشاری معمولا به جای ممیز از کلمه‌ی point استفاده می‌شود و به جای عدد صفر از zero یاnaught استتفاده می‌شود و اعداد بعد از ممیز، یکی یکی خوانده می‌شوند. ) ممکن است در گفتارهای غیر رسمی به جای صفر o گفته شود)

0 .002 = "point zero zero two", "point o o two", "nought point zero zero two", etc.

0.5 = naught point five (US: zero point five)

3.375 = three point three seven five

99.3 = ninety- nine point three

13.75 = thirteen point seven five

3.1416 = three point one four one six

بیان اعداد در زبان انگلیسی

How to say numbers in English

1. ابتدا از یک تا 20

One/ two / three/ four/ five/ six/ seven/ eight/ nine/ ten/ eleven/ twelve/ thirteen/ fourteen/ fifteen/ sixteen/ seventeen/ eighteen/ nineteen/ twenty

2. ده تا 100

Ten/ twenty/ thirty/ fifty/ fifty/ sixty/ seventy/ eighty/ ninety/ hundred

اکنون برای گفتن اعداد از یک تا 100 مشکلی نداریم. برای مثال اگر عدد 22 را بخواهیم بیان کنیم، می‌گوییم: twenty two یا 71 می‌شود: seventy one. پس هر عددی را که بخواهیم بیان کنیم اول دهگان آن را می‌گوییم و بلافاصله یکان آن را اضافه می‌کنیم.

3. اعداد بین 100 تا 1000

One hundred/ two hundred/ three hundred/ four hundred ….. one thousand

باید توجه داشته باشیم که به hundred )100) یا thousand (1000) نباید s جمع اضافه کنیم.

4. اعدا 1000 تا 1000000

هر تعداد 1000 وجود داشته باشد را اول می گوییم و سپس کلمه‌ی thousand  را می‌آوریم.

1000 = one thousand

2000 = two thousand

20,000 = twenty thousand

30,000 = thirty thousand

85,000 = eighty-five thousand

999,000 = nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand (British English)
nine hundred ninety-nine thousand (American English)

1,000,000 = one million

در انگلیسی بریتانیا بین اعداد از کلمه‌ی and استفاده می‌شود اما در انگلیسی امریکا از این کلمه استفاده نمی‌شود.

325 = three hundred and twenty-five (UK)

325 = three hundred twenty-five (US)

719 = seven hundred and nineteen (UK)

719 = seven hundred nineteen (US)

3,077 = three thousand and seventy-seven (UK)

3,077 = three thousand seventy-seven (US)

توجه: بعد از هزارگان یک ویرگول برای جدا کردن گذاشته می‌شود.

5. بیشتر از یک میلیون:

1000,000 = one million

1,000,000,000 = one billion (US) one milliard (UK)

1,000,000,000,000 = one trillion (US) one billion (UK)

1,000,000,000,000,000 = one quadrillion (US) one billiard (UK)

در گفتارهای غیرسمی و دوستانه ممکن است اعداد جور دیگری گفته شوند. مثلا به جای صفر oh گفته شود. بخصوص در گفتن شماره های خیابانها، منازل یا اتوبوسها.

101 = "One-oh-one."

109 = "One-oh-nine."

110 = "One-ten." or  "One-one-oh."  

208 = "Two-oh-eight."

334 = "Three-thirty-four." Or "Three-three- four.

بیان روز و ماه

هرچند از روشهای مختلفی برای بیان تقویم استفاده می‌شود اما می‌توان معمولترین آنها را به این ترتیب ذکر کرد:

1. درانگلیسی بریتانیایی معمولا روز قبل از ماه می‌آید و روز به صورت ترتیبی بیان می‌شود:

The 1st of October 1984

The first of January 2005

The 25th of January 2005

گاهی the  و of حذف می‌شوند:

25th January 2005

ممکن است ترتیبی بودن (th) هم حذف شود:

 25 January 2005

2. در انگلیسی امریکایی معمولا روز بعد از ماه می‌آید:

September 4, 1990 (read "September four(th), nineteen ninety")

June 10, 1969 (June ten(th), nineteen sixty-nine")
